Typically, if you have your oil changed at the service center, the technicians will reset your BMW service light for you. However, if you do your own oil changes, you’ll need to reset the light for yourself. You can do this in less than five minutes by following these instructions:
- Turn on the vehicle’s electrical systems but do not start the engine. Some models with push-button start will have you push the ignition three times in a row, some require it only once. Check your owner’s manual to be sure.
- Locate the small odometer button near the bottom left corner of the instrument panel.
- Press and hold it until the service message appears.
- Release the button, and press and hold it again until the message says “Reset?”.
- Release the button again, and press and hold it while the message says “Reset in Progress,” until the message says, “Reset Successful.”
- Turn the car off and then fully start it to make sure the BMW service light was successfully reset.
The service light in your BMW plays an important role in keeping you on schedule when it comes to routine service. This light is a simple reminder light that comes on when your vehicle needs an oil change. Unlike a warning or indicator light, this light comes on after a preset amount of time, not when it’s triggered by a problem or usage of a feature. Depending on the type of oil your BMW uses, this could be every six months or every year.
